Kolkata: West Bengal’s Director General of Police (DGP) Siddhanath Gupta has received another extension in service, with the Centre extending his tenure by a further six months.
Gupta was originally scheduled to retire on October 31. However, before his retirement, the Union government has communicated its decision to extend his service to the West Bengal government, informing the Nabanna administration about the fresh extension. This is the second extension granted to the state police chief in recent months. Gupta was earlier scheduled to retire on April 30, but his tenure was extended by six months as the state was going through the election process. The extension at that time was approved by the Union Home Ministry headed by Amit Shah.
With the latest decision, Gupta will now continue as the state’s police chief until April next year. The extension comes at a significant time for West Bengal, with the state administration preparing for the post-election phase and a number of key law-and-order issues remaining under close scrutiny. The Centre’s decision is expected to have political and administrative significance, as the DGP plays a crucial role in overseeing the state’s law-and-order machinery and policing arrangements. The latest extension means Siddhanath Gupta will continue to head the West Bengal Police beyond his previously scheduled retirement date, making his tenure considerably longer than originally anticipated.
